Cosmeceuticals is a marketing word representing the marriage of cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. Cosmeceuticals are cosmetic products with active biological ingredients claiming to have medical or drug-like benefits. Beauty aids cosmecueticals reportedly work like prescription drugs, are providing scientific ways to clinically treat aging skin.
A Journal entry recently published in Cosmetic Dermatology explores the variety of cosmecuetical ingredients that provide a noticeable improvement in older skin.
The most apparant signs of aging include lack of skin surface regularity, new wrinkles, and increased hyperpigmentation. Zoe Diana Draelos, MD, of Dermatology Consulting Services, High Point, North Carolina, assessed the cosmecuetical efficiency in a variety of ingredients on each of these areas of mature skin.
She found that skin appearance irregularity can be improved through the application of niacin – a type of vitamin A, while the visibility of fine lines can be reduced through moisturizers containing engineered peptides (collagen components) and over-the-counter retinoids. Irregular pigmentation can become more even with the use of sunblock ingredients. Furthermore, combining ingredients in a moisturizing cosmecuetical can multiply benefits andvisibly improve skin.
